XTAR sent the L8 PRO over for review, and it's one of those products that sounds simple on paper — it charges AA and AAA batteries — but the execution is genuinely better than most of what's out there. The LCD display and wide battery compatibility are the two things that set it apart from a basic charger, and after using it, both stand up.
The L8 PRO is an 8-slot smart charger designed for AA and AAA rechargeable batteries. Each slot charges independently, meaning you can throw in a mix of batteries at different charge levels and it handles each one on its own. It supports NiMH and NiCd chemistries, works with standard rechargeable AA and AAA sizes, and includes an LCD display that shows you real-time charge status per slot.
If you run a lot of rechargeable batteries — for remotes, wireless mics, flashlights, trail cameras, gaming controllers, or just around the house — the L8 PRO is designed to be the one charger that handles everything without guesswork.

Most basic chargers give you a single LED indicator. Green means done, red means charging — and that's all you get. You have no idea what percentage each battery is at, whether one slot is struggling, or which batteries are actually full versus still working. The L8 PRO's LCD display changes that entirely.
"You can see exactly what each battery is doing at a glance. It sounds basic but it's a genuine upgrade over guessing at LEDs."
Each slot shows its own charge status on the display, so you can see at a glance which batteries are full, which are still charging, and roughly where each one is in the process. For anyone charging multiple batteries regularly, that visibility is genuinely useful — especially when you're prepping gear before a trip or shoot and need to know what's ready to go.
The L8 PRO works with the full range of standard rechargeable AA and AAA batteries — Eneloop, Eneloop Pro, Duracell Rechargeable, Amazon Basics, XTAR's own cells, and most other NiMH brands. You don't need to stick to a specific brand to get proper charging. Mixed brands across slots is fine too.
This matters more than it might seem. A lot of households end up with rechargeable batteries from multiple sources over the years. A charger that handles all of them without compatibility issues is genuinely convenient, especially in an 8-slot format where you're likely running a variety at once.
In practice the L8 PRO just works. Load up the slots, plug it in, and the display tells you what's happening. There's no app, no complicated setup, nothing to configure. For a charger, that's exactly what you want.
If you're a content creator running wireless mics, remotes, or any battery-powered gear that goes through AAs regularly, having 8 slots charging at once is a genuine time saver compared to most 4-slot or 2-slot options.
Anyone who runs a lot of AA/AAA rechargeables and wants to actually see what's happening with each battery. The display alone makes it worth it over basic chargers.
Content creators, photographers, or households with high battery turnover — 8 slots and wide compatibility means one charger handles everything.
If you only charge 2–4 batteries occasionally and a basic LED charger is working fine for you — no compelling reason to upgrade.
The XTAR L8 PRO does exactly what a good charger should do — it works well, it tells you what it's doing, and it handles whatever batteries you throw at it. No complaints.
