The short answer
The new iPad mini starts at 699 USD and the model it replaces is 599 USD, so this is a 100 USD gap rather than the 200 USD headroom Apple had before the June price increase. For that 100 USD you get an OLED display, the A20 Pro chip, IP67 water and dust resistance, a landscape front camera, and a thinner, lighter body. Measured that way, the eighth-generation mini is the easier upgrade decision Apple has offered in this category in years, provided you are coming from anything older than a mini 7.
Display: this is the whole argument
The mini 7 has an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD at 2,266 by 1,488, with True Tone, P3 wide color and up to 500 nits. The mini 8 moves to an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR panel that Apple rates at up to 1,200 nits peak, more than double the previous generation, with 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1-nit minimum brightness for reading in the dark. It also grows the screen without growing the device, because the bezels are 24 percent thinner and the footprint is unchanged. A nano-texture anti-glare option is available for the first time on a mini, which matters for reading outside or editing in a vehicle.
Chip and memory
The mini 7 uses the A17 Pro on a 3-nanometer process, with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and 8GB of RAM. The mini 8 moves to the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process with a package inspired by the M-series, with a 7-core GPU that includes Neural Accelerators in each core, up to a 6-core CPU, up to 60 percent faster multithreaded performance, up to 2.7x faster graphics and up to 4.5x faster AI performance. Apple says the 512GB configuration uses a dual 16-core Neural Engine and there is more than twice the unified memory bandwidth. In plain terms: the mini 8 is the first small iPad that can credibly run on-device AI workloads rather than just Apple Intelligence features.
Everything else that changed
The body is 5.4mm thin, available in midnight and starlight, and rated IP67, which the mini 7 does not have at all. Audio moves to an Acoustic Display system with woofers coupled through the display and tweeters hidden between glass and aluminium, in a sealed enclosure that makes the water resistance possible. The front camera moves to the landscape edge as a 12MP Center Stage camera, which finally makes video calls on a mini sensible. Connectivity jumps to the N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, plus the C2 modem on cellular models for up to 50 percent faster cellular data. The mini 7 offers Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and sub-6GHz 5G by comparison.
What did not change
The refresh rate is still 60Hz, which is the most common complaint about this release and a legitimate one at 699 USD. Storage still starts at 128GB, the back camera remains a 12MP wide unit now with Smart HDR 4 and 4K video at up to 60fps, the battery is still all-day in Apple's terms, and it still uses Touch ID in the power button rather than Face ID. Apple Pencil Pro support carries over. So the mini 8 is a display, chip and durability upgrade, not a redesign of what the product is.
Who should upgrade and who should not
If you own a mini 6 or anything older, this is the upgrade: OLED, IP67, a chip that will stay current for years and a landscape camera change the experience daily. If you own a mini 7 and use it for reading, notes and media, the honest answer is that you have a good tablet and the biggest gain you would notice is the display. If you do not own a mini at all, buy the 8 if you can stretch to 699 USD, because the gap to the older model is only 100 USD now that the mini 7 sits at 599 USD. If you want a cheaper entry, Apple's refurbished store and third-party discounts on the mini 7 are worth watching, but the value case narrows every week the price stays where it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the iPad mini 8 cost compared to the mini 7?
The iPad mini 8 starts at 699 USD and the iPad mini 7 currently starts at 599 USD after Apple raised its price by 100 USD in June 2026. The gap is 100 USD.
Is the iPad mini 8 worth upgrading from the mini 7?
If you mainly read and watch video, the display is the main gain. If you own a mini 6 or older, the OLED screen, A20 Pro chip, IP67 rating and landscape camera make it a substantial upgrade.
Does the iPad mini 8 have ProMotion or 120Hz?
No. The display remains 60Hz, which is the most consistent criticism of the new model at its price.
Is the iPad mini 8 waterproof?
It carries an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, a first for iPad mini. The IP rating is helped by the sealed Acoustic Display enclosure.
What chip is in the iPad mini 8?
The A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process with a 7-core GPU that includes Neural Accelerators, up to a 6-core CPU, and up to 4.5x faster AI performance than the previous generation.
