Insta360 X5 Firmware 1.13.21: AI Director and Spatial Capture Arrive Free
Insta360 has pushed the X6's two signature software features down to the X5. Firmware v1.13.21 adds AI Director, the charge-while-editing auto-editor, and Spatial Capture, which turns 360 footage into explorable 3D models. If you own an X5, this is the most valuable free update the camera has ever received.

What is in firmware v1.13.21
Released September 16, 2026, firmware v1.13.21 is Insta360 doing something unusual: giving the previous flagship the current flagship's best software features. The update adds two functions that launched with the X6 in August 2026:
- AI Director — the camera automatically finds highlights in your footage and cuts them into a finished video while it charges
- Spatial Capture — record a place in 360 and the app generates an explorable 3D model of it
I own three X5 bodies, and they are the workhorses of my camera kit — on the bike, in the garage, on trips. An update like this changes what those cameras can do without me spending a dollar, which is exactly the kind of post-launch support that justifies staying one generation back.
AI Director on the X5
AI Director is Insta360's answer to the biggest problem with 360 cameras: you capture everything, and then you have to edit it. The workflow is simple. Leave the X5 powered off and charging at the end of a shoot. While it charges, the camera analyzes the footage on the card, selects highlights, and produces a polished, edited clip — without you touching a keyboard.
On the X6 this is powered by Insta360's in-house PanoMind 360 AI model, and it was the headline feature of that camera's launch. Reviewers' reactions to AI Director results have been mixed, with some praising the ease and others finding the edits generic and template-like — so treat it as a first-draft machine, not an editor. The real value is on days when footage would otherwise sit unedited on a card for weeks. For a trip like my 4,000 km ECIC Muskoka run, that alone can be the difference between a video that exists and a hard drive of good intentions.
Spatial Capture: 360 footage into 3D models
Spatial Capture is the more technically interesting addition. Powered by 3D Gaussian Splatting, it lets you record a place — a room, a garage, a trail junction, a bike in detail — in 360, and the Insta360 app converts that footage into a fully explorable 3D model that is yours to keep. Every angle stays exactly where you captured it.
The rollout spans the current X-lineup: X4 Air, X5, and X6 all support it. Insta360 says availability is being introduced through a phased rollout due to differences in technical environments, so if you do not see the option yet, check again after updating the app. You need Insta360 app version 2.34.0 or later.
Practical uses for a creator: walk a riding route or a campsite and send someone a navigable 3D snapshot instead of a shaky handheld video, or capture a workspace layout in a format you can re-visit from any angle later.
What still separates the X6
Be clear about what this update is not: it does not touch hardware. The X6's advantages over the X5 are physical, and firmware cannot bridge them. Per Insta360's August 12, 2026 launch specifications:
- Sensors: dual custom 1/1.1-inch Sony sensors versus the X5's 1/1.28-inch — a substantial jump in sensor area and low-light performance
- 360 video: 8K at 50fps natively on the X6; the X5 tops out at 8K30
- Single lens: 5K60 and 4K120 on the X6
- Battery: 2,600 mAh with roughly 140 minutes of 8K/30fps recording
- Body: shorter, wider frame with Replaceable Lenses 2.0
The X6 launched at US$669.99 for the Standard Bundle, US$120 above the X5's US$549.99 launch price. If AI Director and Spatial Capture were your reasons to want an X6, firmware just took them off the ledger. If 8K50, better low light, or the new body were your reasons, the X5 update does not change your math.
Does this change the X5 vs X6 answer?
Yes, in the X5's favor. I wrote about the X5 versus X6 upgrade question when the X6 launched, and the honest summary then was: the X6 is a real upgrade, but the X5 remained good value. That value case is now materially stronger. The two most marketable X6 software features are free on the X5, the X5 still produces excellent 8K30 360 footage, and its replaceable-lens ruggedness has proven itself in my kit.
My practical take: if you already own an X5, update the firmware and the app tonight and enjoy your "new" camera. If you are buying new and primarily deliver YouTube horizontal content, the X6's sensor and frame-rate advantages remain worth the premium for a primary camera. The X5 at its current street price is now arguably the best-value 360 camera on the market for a second body or a first one.
How to get the update
Update through the Insta360 app: connect the X5, and the app will offer firmware v1.13.21. Update the app itself to 2.34.0 or later first, since Spatial Capture requires it. Both features arrive free. If AI Director or Spatial Capture does not appear immediately, Insta360's phased rollout means the option can appear a few days later — nothing is wrong with your camera.
