GoPro just reinvented itself. The Mission One series is not another action camera — it is a compact cinema camera with a 50MP 1-inch sensor, 8K recording, and the new GP3 chip. Starting at $499 USD, here is what it does, what it costs in Canada, and whether it is worth your money.

What GoPro Built
GoPro has been making action cameras since 2004. The Mission One is something different. It is a compact cinema camera that happens to be rugged and waterproof, not an action camera that happens to shoot high resolution.
The key difference is the sensor. Instead of the small sensors in HERO-series cameras, the Mission One uses a 50MP 1-inch sensor — the same sensor class you find in premium compact cameras like the Sony RX100 series. Paired with GoPro's new GP3 processor, it captures 8K video at up to 50fps and still images at 50 megapixels.
This is a big deal for a company that many people were writing off. The GoPro HERO13 is a great action camera, but the Mission One puts GoPro in a completely different product category — compact cinema cameras competing with the likes of Sony, Canon, and Blackmagic.

GoPro is offering subscriber pricing that significantly undercuts MSRP. If you already pay for a GoPro subscription, the Mission One starts at $499.99 USD. Without a subscription, the MSRP is $599.99 USD.
In Canada, Best Buy lists the Mission One Pro at CA$809.99, currently on sale for CA$669.99 (sale ends August 27, 2026). That puts it in the same price range as a mid-range mirrorless camera.
The Mission One Pro ILS — the interchangeable lens version — will be $699.99 MSRP / $599.99 subscriber when it becomes available in Q3 2026.

The standard Mission One shoots 4K Open Gate, which means it uses the full sensor area without cropping. The Pro model adds 8K at 50fps. The Pro ILS adds interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lenses, opening up everything from wide-angle to telephoto.
How It Compares
I own a GoPro HERO13 and two Insta360 Ace Pro 2 cameras. The HERO13 tops out at 5.3K60 with a much smaller sensor. The Ace Pro 2 shoots 8K30 with a 1/1.28-inch sensor. The Mission One Pro's 1-inch sensor is significantly larger than both.
A larger sensor means better low-light performance, shallower depth of field, and more dynamic range. In theory, the Mission One Pro should produce noticeably better image quality than any action camera on the market today.
But it is also bigger and heavier than a HERO13, and the fixed 14mm lens means you cannot zoom or swap lenses (unless you get the Pro ILS). It is a different tool for a different job.
Who Is This For?
- Content creators who want cinematic image quality without carrying a full mirrorless rig. The Mission One is pocketable and waterproof.
- Travel filmmakers who need one camera that can handle everything from street scenes to underwater shots.
- YouTube creators who want 8K for future-proofing and crop flexibility in post.
