Transport Canada has issued recall 2026464 for Yamaha motorcycles equipped with the Y-AMT automated manual transmission, and the guidance is unusually direct: do not ride the motorcycle until the recall repairs are completed. The recall was originally published September 28, 2026 and last updated October 9, 2026.
According to the Transport Canada notice, on certain motorcycles the shift shaft stopper could break. If it does, the transmission may not be able to shift gears, or it may unintentionally change gears. The notice also warns the engine may not restart. The safety consequence is a sudden loss of stability or control, which increases the risk of a crash.
This is not a nuisance defect. An unexpected gear change or a gearbox that will not shift mid-corner or in traffic is a genuine control-loss scenario, which is why Transport Canada and Yamaha both advise parking the bike until it is repaired.
The Canadian recall lists the 2025 and 2026 Yamaha Tracer 9 Y-AMT. The related recall in Japan, announced by Yamaha Motor on September 30, 2026, covers the Tracer 9 GT+ Y-AMT and the MT-09 S, with roughly 1,289 motorcycles built between June 2024 and August 2026 affected there, according to European and Asian recall reporting. Some markets, including Germany, were still waiting for their local recall campaigns when the story broke in October 2026. The Canadian list currently names only the Tracer 9 Y-AMT, so MT-09 S owners in Canada should watch the Transport Canada database for updates.
Three steps. First, stop riding: Yamaha advises not riding until the repair is done, and the failure mode does not give you warning. Second, check your VIN against Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database (recall number 2026464) or call your Yamaha dealer with your VIN. Third, wait for Yamaha's mailed notice or book the dealer visit now: the fix replaces the shift shaft assembly with an improved component, free of charge.
Y-AMT is Yamaha's automated manual transmission, which replaces the clutch lever and foot shifter with electronic shift actuation, letting riders shift by paddle or let the transmission handle everything. It is appearing on more of Yamaha's sport-touring lineup, including the 2026 Tracer 7 in Europe. A recall on the first generation of any new transmission is normal engineering life, but it is a reminder for touring riders: automated gearboxes add actuators and linkages that need the same recall vigilance as any other safety system. If you are shopping used, ask whether the shift shaft recall service has been performed before you ride the bike home.
Transport Canada recall 2026464 lists the 2025 and 2026 Yamaha Tracer 9 Y-AMT. The related Japanese recall also includes the MT-09 S, but the Canadian list currently names only the Tracer 9 Y-AMT.
Transport Canada's advice is blunt: do not ride the motorcycle until the recall repair is completed. Yamaha will notify owners by mail and a dealership will replace the shift shaft assembly free of charge.
Yes. Recall repairs are performed by dealers at no cost to the owner. Yamaha replaces the shift shaft assembly with an improved component.
