Indian Ride Command Heated Grips Not Showing Up? Here's the Fix That Worked on My Pursuit
After a Ride Command update, the heated grips icon can vanish from the touchscreen on Indian Pursuit and Challenger models. It happened on my 2024 Pursuit Dark Horse Icon. The fix takes ten seconds and doesn't need a dealer visit.

This one happened to me. I went to turn on the heated grips on my 2024 Pursuit Dark Horse Icon from the Ride Command screen, and the icon was just gone. Not greyed out, not buried in a menu, gone. If that's where you are right now, good news: the grips aren't broken, the heater elements aren't dead, and you don't need a dealer appointment. The fix takes about ten seconds, and it's the same fix that's worked for owners across the Indian forums.

What the Bug Looks Like
The pattern is consistent. Somewhere around a Ride Command software update, the heated grips control disappears from the touchscreen. The grips themselves usually still work when you press the physical switch, but the Ride Command interface stops showing them, so you lose the on-screen heat-level control and the at-a-glance confirmation that they're on.
It's easy to panic and assume an expensive accessory has failed. It hasn't. Everything about the symptom points to the display's accessory list not re-registering the grips after the update, not the grips themselves.
The Fix, Step by Step
2. Press the physical heated grips switch on the left side, below the left fairing cubby, and turn the grips on manually.
3. As soon as the grips come on, the heated grips icon reappears in Ride Command, and it stays available afterward.
That's it. The icon doesn't just come back for that ride — owners who've done this report the control is permanently available on the Ride Command screen again, the way it was before the update.
This is exactly how I fixed my own Pursuit, and it's the same fix confirmed by a 2023 Pursuit Dark Horse owner who originally watched his icon disappear after an update and later reported back on the forum: hit the manual button, and the moment the grips come on, the Ride Command entry "magically appears."
Why It Happens
Indian hasn't published a technical service bulletin for this, so the honest answer is that the root cause isn't officially documented. What we know from owner reports: the bug follows Ride Command software updates, it hits the grips' on-screen control rather than the hardware, and one manual activation re-registers the accessory and restores it. My best read is that the update resets the touchscreen's accessory detection and the grips don't get re-added to the display's list until they're actively switched on once. That's an informed guess from the evidence, not an official explanation, and I'd label it that way.
One owner made another useful observation: the icon can also disappear after a long period of not using the grips at all. So if you first notice this on the first cold morning of fall, that timing isn't a coincidence, and it doesn't mean anything new broke.
You're Not Alone: Other Reports
This isn't one unlucky bike. The reports line up across models and years:
- 2023 Pursuit Dark Horse — icon vanished after a Ride Command update; dealer initially had no clue. Fixed with the manual switch.
- 2024 Pursuit Dark Horse — same experience within a week of updating, reported by a second owner.
- 2024 Challenger Dark Horse — owner had to turn the grips on manually after the update before they'd show in Ride Command; permanently fine afterward.
- Pursuit forum (Facebook) — an owner reported the grips work but don't recall their previous setting or appear in Ride Command, and was told by Indian there's no software flash for it.
The same "disappearing icon" pattern has shown up beyond grips, too. A 2025 Roadmaster Power Plus 112 owner reported his fog light icon vanished from Ride Command the same way. And after the July 2026 Ride Command update, at least one owner reported a C175A fault code for a left heated grip his bike doesn't even have, which reads like the same accessory-detection confusion pointing the other direction.
When It's NOT This Bug
Read this part carefully before you relax. If the heated grips icon vanished along with other systems misbehaving, you have a different problem. A Challenger owner on a long western trip had his grips icon disappear and the traction control light flicker, cruise control drop out, and the fuel gauge show a range of 14,200 miles. Forum members zeroed in on the likely culprit for that one: a loose ground or a bad speed sensor, not Ride Command.
The rule of thumb: icon gone, everything else normal, grips work on the physical switch = this bug, use the fix. Multiple warning lights, cruise or ABS acting up, or gauges reading nonsense = electrical, and that's a dealer diagnostic, not a button press.
