Is 8K Video Worth It in 2026? An Honest Answer

8K video sounds impressive on a spec sheet, but almost nobody watches 8K content. Here is when 8K actually helps, when it is a waste of storage, and what matters more than resolution for quality footage.

The reality of 8K in 2026

8K video captures approximately 33 million pixels per frame — four times the resolution of 4K. On paper, this sounds like a massive quality improvement. In reality, almost no consumer display can show 8K. The vast majority of viewers watch YouTube at 1080p or 1440p. Even on a 4K TV, 8K footage is downscaled to 4K for display — so the viewer sees 4K regardless.

Several action cameras offer 8K in 2026, including the GoPro HERO13 and some Insta360 models. The question is whether the extra resolution translates to visibly better footage for your audience, or whether it just eats storage and slows your editing workflow.

When 8K actually helps

The storage and editing cost

ResolutionPer minutePer hourEditing performance
4K H.265 (100 Mbps)0.75 GB45 GBSmooth on any modern Mac
8K H.265 (200 Mbps)1.5 GB90 GBNeeds M4/M5 or fast desktop
8K ProRes18 GB1.1 TBNeeds top-tier workstation

8K doubles your storage needs compared to 4K. A 256 GB SD card holds about 6 hours of 4K but only 3 hours of 8K. Editing 8K timeline footage requires a powerful machine — my Mac Studio M4 Max handles 4K smoothly but 8K requires proxy editing in Final Cut Pro.

What matters more than resolution

For most content creators, resolution is not the bottleneck. These factors matter more:

My recommendation by use case

Vlogging and YouTube: Shoot 4K 60fps. Do not bother with 8K — your viewers cannot see the difference and you waste storage.

Action cameras: Shoot 4K 60fps or 5.3K 30fps. If you crop heavily in post, try 8K 30fps but test whether the quality difference is visible at your export resolution.

360 cameras: Higher resolution is better for reframing. 8K 360 gives you better reframed footage than 5.7K 360. This is the one case where 8K genuinely helps.

Professional delivery: Shoot at your delivery resolution. If you deliver 4K, shoot 4K. If you deliver 8K, shoot 8K. Do not shoot 8K and deliver 1080p.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can viewers tell the difference between 4K and 8K on YouTube?

No. YouTube compresses video to the viewer's playback resolution, which is 1080p or 1440p for most viewers. 4K and 8K look identical at these resolutions.

Does 8K use more battery?

Yes. 8K recording requires more processing power, which drains the battery faster than 4K. Expect 20-30% shorter battery life at 8K on action cameras.

Is 8K worth it for 360 cameras?

Yes. 360 cameras crop heavily when reframing, so higher resolution directly improves reframed footage quality. An 8K 360 camera gives you approximately 4K quality when reframed to 16:9.

Greg's take: I shoot 4K 60fps for both my channels and have never felt limited by resolution. The GoPro HERO13 can do 8K, but the visible quality difference on YouTube is zero and the storage cost is double. The one exception is 360 cameras — the Insta360 X5's higher resolution directly improves reframed footage. For everything else, spend your money on better audio, stabilization, and lighting, not more pixels.
