The October 1 announcement

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, on October 1, 2026. The company describes it as a faster performance tier of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, designed to bring AI-guided image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5. Sony says its streamlined neural-network architecture and performance-tuned implementation make this possible on hardware that previously could not support the more computationally demanding PSSR experience.

Which games support QSSR first

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to use QSSR. The announcement says both games were being patched on October 1 to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. That means players should treat this as a game-specific graphics option, not a system-wide switch that automatically changes every PS5 game.

QSSR and PSSR are not the same tier

Sony says PSSR remains its higher-end upscaling option on PS5 Pro, while QSSR is a performance-oriented option for the standard PS5. Both use machine-learning techniques to reconstruct a higher-detail image from a game’s rendered output, but Sony positions QSSR as a separate performance tier rather than claiming parity with PS5 Pro. The company’s post describes intended improvements in image detail and stability; it does not provide a universal resolution or frame-rate guarantee.

What players should check

Install the relevant game update, then check that game’s graphics settings for a QSSR option. The available modes and their trade-offs can differ by title. Compare the choices on your own display and decide whether you prefer the QSSR image, another image-quality mode, or a performance-focused option. Do not assume an update selects QSSR automatically.

What Sony has not said yet

Sony says QSSR will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers and anticipates more games using it. The October 1 announcement does not list a complete future title roster, a date for each game, or standardized performance targets. Those specifics will need to come from individual developers or later Sony announcements. It is too early to promise a uniform visual or frame-rate improvement across the PS5 library.

The practical takeaway

QSSR is a newly announced PS5 graphics option, with two named launch titles and a stated plan to offer the library to developers. For owners, the immediate action is simply to update those games and inspect their settings. For everyone else, the useful question is not whether “AI upscaling” guarantees better graphics, but whether a particular game’s implementation gives you a visible improvement at an acceptable performance trade-off.
