Insta360 Luna Ultra Firmware: 15x Zoom, Stage Mode, and the New 450mm Telephoto Lens
Insta360 just pushed the biggest Luna Ultra update since launch: firmware 1.1.12 raises zoom to 15x, adds a concert-tuned Stage Mode, brings 4K vertical video, and pairs with a new magnetic telephoto lens that reaches a 450mm equivalent on a camera that weighs just over 200 g (7 oz).

What firmware 1.1.12 includes
The update rolled out via the Insta360 app the week of September 21, 2026, with coverage from CineD on September 24 and Camera Decision dating the release to September 23. It is free for every Luna Ultra owner: connect the camera in the app and follow the prompts. There are four headline additions:
- 15x zoom (up from 12x), equal to a 300mm-equivalent field of view
- Stage Mode, a dedicated shooting profile for concerts, festivals, and theater
- 4K30 vertical video, triggered by rotating the detachable OLED screen
- A new Ultra Telephoto Lens, a magnetic snap-on optic that multiplies the telephoto by 1.5x
I own a Luna Ultra, and this is the kind of update I like seeing: it does not fix what was broken, it adds genuinely new capability to hardware that has not changed since launch.
15x zoom: how much is real
First, the honest optics. Nothing about the glass changes with this update. The Luna Ultra's telephoto module is a 1/1.3-inch sensor, and its lossless zoom point is 6x. Everything beyond that is a digital crop of the sensor, and 15x is a heavier crop than the previous 12x ceiling. Insta360 claims its dual imaging chips and an AI Remosaic process reconstruct detail that conventional digital zoom would lose, keeping people, text, and buildings more defined at full zoom. That is a manufacturer claim about reconstructed detail, not measured resolution. Insta360 recommends shooting 4K30 for the best telephoto results, which tells you the headroom is real but finite.
The gimbal is the other half of the story. A 300mm equivalent on a 3-axis stabilizer in a 200 g (7 oz) body is something no phone and no traditional action camera can match. Whether the pixels hold up at 15x is a different question from whether the frame holds steady — the frame will hold.
The Ultra Telephoto Lens: 90mm to 450mm
The hardware half of the announcement is the more interesting one. The Ultra Telephoto Lens is a magnetic snap-on optic that sits in front of the telephoto module and multiplies its focal length by 1.5x. With it attached, the Luna Ultra's telephoto range runs from a 90mm equivalent at the native end to 450mm at 15x, and Insta360 advertises up to 22.5x magnification in combination.
Two things worth knowing before you order:
- It is telephoto-only. The lens physically covers the main 20mm camera, so while it is on, you have no wide shot. You snap it off to get the wide angle back.
- It moves the lossless point. The 1.5x multiplier is a real optical change, shifting the lossless zoom boundary from 120mm to 180mm equivalent.
Pricing in Canada: $74.99 CAD for the lens on its own, direct from Insta360's official Canadian store (verified September 25, 2026; in stock). US coverage lists it at $49.99 USD. Insta360 is also selling a Luna Ultra Zoom Bundle at US$889.99, a US$120 step over the Standard Bundle at US$769.99, which adds the lens and a carry bag. For existing owners like me, the standalone lens is the obvious path.
Context: the cheaper Insta360 Luna Pro (US$599.99, launched September 10, 2026) shares the same 1-inch 8K main camera but lacks the telephoto module entirely. Every dollar Insta360 invests in the Ultra's reach widens the gap between the two models.
Stage Mode: tuned for concerts
Stage Mode is the most specialized addition. It is a dedicated profile that bundles several changes aimed at filming performers:
- Image tuning: face-specific filtering and adjusted focus sensitivity so the camera stops locking onto glow sticks and other bright objects between you and the stage, harder highlight suppression with face-weighted metering, and separate white balance and color handling so saturated stage lighting still looks like stage lighting instead of a smeared mess.
- Tracking: a stronger tracking model trained on concert footage, meant to recognize, follow, and reacquire performers at high zoom ratios in low light, which is exactly where a handheld gimbal at 15x normally falls apart.
- Audio: two new options, Stage Audio (prioritizes sound from the direction of the stage) and Ambient Audio (keeps more of the room), both processed through the built-in microphones.
Stage Mode works with the Ultra Telephoto Lens attached, and you can grab Live Frame photos mid-recording without stopping the video. Insta360 is clearly chasing the concert-and-festival vertical here, and no other pocket gimbal camera has anything comparable built in.
4K vertical video
The Luna Ultra can now shoot 4K30 vertical. Rotate the detachable OLED screen to a vertical position and the camera switches to a portrait frame. Insta360 says the 4K portrait image is oversampled from 6K rather than cropped from a horizontal 4K frame, which matters for detail. One honest caveat: vertical mode supports up to 6x zoom, but Insta360 recommends staying at 3x or below, stating that telephoto image quality between 3x and 6x is still being optimized and will be finalized in the official release. That is Insta360's own wording, and it means part of this update is still in progress on the day it ships.
There are two smaller additions as well: a Zoom Live style that adds an automated push-in to Live Frame captures, and Live Frame photos can now combine Beauty Mode with the cinematic filters.
What this means for Luna Ultra owners
There are two ways to read this update. The generous read: a camera you already own just gained 450mm of reach, a concert mode, and 4K vertical for the cost of an optional $74.99 CAD lens. That is real value, and it is why I keep recommending Insta360's post-launch support — my X5 units have received similar mid-life gifts.
The skeptical read: Insta360 cannot fix the Luna Ultra's sensor with firmware, and independent lab testing (CineD, July 30, 2026) found the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P comfortably outperformed it on dynamic range and exposure. Leaning into reach, modes, and accessories instead of image quality is the smart play for a company that cannot change the hardware — but it is worth knowing that is what this is. For a solo shooter at a sports field, a stage, or scouting a riding route from the car, 450mm in a jacket pocket is still a genuinely different tool than anything else on the market.
