The short version
Apple is expected to announce the iPad mini 8 in October 2026, closing out a busy month that starts with the October 13 smart home event. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and MacRumors sources both point to the new mini arriving this month, and a string of leaks has already sketched out what it will bring: the first OLED display on a mini, a big chip jump, and the first water-resistance rating in the line's history.
The ten features being reported
1. A20 Pro chip (or A19 Pro)
A MacRumors exclusive leak pointed to the A20 Pro, the same chip family expected in the iPhone 18 Pro. A separate code leak found in August suggested the A19 Pro instead, the chip that debuted in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro. Either way, it is a serious jump over the A17 Pro in the current iPad mini 7.
2. 12GB of RAM
The A20 Pro leak also comes with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB in the current model. The reported reason is practical: it enables on-device Siri AI voice customization, one of the features Apple has been building out across its lineup.
3. OLED display
The headline upgrade. The mini would join the iPad Pro in switching from LCD to OLED, bringing richer colors, higher contrast, and true blacks. Expect roughly the same 8.3-inch size.
4. Possibly 120Hz
The current mini is stuck at 60Hz. Since the base iPhone 17 now ships with a 120Hz ProMotion panel, a similar bump is considered reasonable to expect on the first OLED mini, but it is not confirmed.
5. Slimmer bezels
Reported thinner borders around the display, without a major redesign of the body itself.
6. Redesigned speakers
The leak describes a speaker system with no visible speaker holes, and potentially an iPhone-earpiece-style speaker in the top bezel.
7. IP-rated water resistance
A first for the iPad mini line. The exact rating is not known.
8. Landscape front camera
A leak from late September pointed to a landscape-oriented front camera, which makes FaceTime and Center Stage behave properly in the orientation most people actually hold a small tablet.
9. October launch
Gurman reported the mini is coming this month, with an October launch most likely.
10. Possibly a higher price
The current iPad mini starts at 599 USD, already raised by 100 USD in June on the back of memory chip prices. With a costlier OLED panel on top, a further increase is a real possibility.
Should you wait?
If you use a mini as a lightweight editing console, drone controller screen, or travel tablet, the OLED panel and chip bump are worth the short wait. The launch window is weeks away, not months. If you need a cheap secondary device today, the entry iPad at 329 USD and the current mini at 599 USD are both discounted regularly, and Apple's refurbished store has started listing the A17 Pro mini at a lower price.
Update, October 24: Apple has now sent official invitations to its Pro and Tell experience event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, which is when the iPad mini 8 is expected to be unveiled. MacRumors reports the new model's CPU performance could be up to roughly 1.5 times faster than the current version, and an October 15 slip on Apple's own website briefly referenced the iPad mini 8 before the reference was pulled. Everything else in this article remains reported rather than confirmed until Apple takes the stage.
