Indian Motorcycle didn't just enter the 2026 King of the Baggers season to compete — they came to dominate. With a multi-year partnership with Vance & Hines Motorsports, a three-rider championship-caliber roster, and a new performance parts division (ARO) that lets you buy race-developed components for your own bike, this is the most serious factory racing program Indian has assembled in the modern era.

As someone who rides a 2024 Indian Pursuit Dark Horse Icon and follows KOTB closely, this partnership matters to me beyond the racing. The tech that Vance & Hines develops on the track is flowing directly to customer-accessible ARO parts. That's not just marketing — it's real engineering provenance you can bolt onto your bike.

The Vance & Hines Partnership

Announced ahead of the 2026 season, Indian Motorcycle entered a multi-year agreement with Vance & Hines Motorsports to lead its factory racing program in the MotoAmerica Mission King of the Baggers series. Vance & Hines — founded by drag racing legend Terry Vance — brings nearly 50 years of V-twin performance engineering to the program.

The partnership goes deeper than a sponsorship sticker. Vance & Hines builds and develops the race Challenger platform, designs the ARO performance parts that customers can buy, and brings the kind of engineering firepower that comes from decades of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle competition. Additional sponsors include Motul USA, J&P Cycles, Progressive Insurance, and Drag Specialties.

The 2026 Wrecking Crew Roster

The 2026 Wrecking Crew is a three-rider team stacked with championship pedigree:

Two recent KOTB champions and a rising star — this is arguably the strongest rider lineup in the King of the Baggers paddock. Having both Gillim and Herfoss on Indian Challenger platforms means the team has two legitimate title threats every weekend.

The Race Challenger

The Wrecking Crew races a heavily developed version of the Indian Challenger, powered by the liquid-cooled 112ci PowerPlus V-twin engine. This is the same engine family that powers the 2026 Signature Series bikes — though my Pursuit runs the 108ci version. The 112ci PowerPlus is an overhead-cam design that has proven its worth in competition since the KOTB class debuted.

Vance & Hines leads development of the race Challenger, pushing the performance envelope as the series gets more competitive. The race bikes run an ARO two-into-one exhaust system developed exclusively for the factory team — the same design philosophy that trickles down to the ARO GP Slip-On exhaust you can buy for your street bike.

2026 Championship Standings (After Round 4 — Laguna Seca)

Indian holds the top two positions in the championship after 4 rounds. Gillim's 5 wins have given him a 13-point lead over his teammate, with Harley's Bradley Smith 20 points back in third. Harley did sweep the Laguna Seca weekend (Smith and Wyman winning both races), but Gillim's consistency across the season keeps him firmly in control.

Season wins: Gillim 5, Wyman 2, Smith 1. With 3 rounds remaining — Mid-Ohio, COTA, and the NJMP finale — the championship is far from settled, but Indian's 1-2 at the top is a strong position.

ARO — From Race Track to Your Bike

Here's where this story gets interesting for riders like me. ARO — American Racing Operations — is the official performance division of Indian Motorcycle. The ARO GP Slip-On Exhaust for select bagger and touring models was designed by the Vance & Hines Factory Indian Motorcycle race team, with Terry Vance himself involved in the design process.

The factory race team runs an ARO two-into-one exhaust system developed exclusively for competition. That same engineering knowledge — the airflow dynamics, the sound tuning, the performance mapping — goes into the ARO customer parts rolling out throughout 2026.

For riders like me who already have a Stage 1 exhaust and air cleaner on their Pursuit, the ARO line represents the next step up — factory-backed, race-developed, and designed by the same engineering team building the KOTB bikes. It's a genuine differentiator for Indian over Harley-Davidson, where Screamin' Eagle parts exist but don't have the same direct Vance & Hines race team lineage.

Mid-Ohio Preview — Round 5 (Jul 31 – Aug 2)

The next race weekend is Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 31 – August 2, 2026. This is a critical round — Mid-Ohio is a tight, technical circuit that rewards precision over outright power, which could favor the Harley camp. Last year's KOTB race at Mid-Ohio was a battle, with Gillim eventually taking the win by a narrow margin.

With Gillim leading by 13 points over Herfoss, a strong Indian showing at Mid-Ohio could put one of the Wrecking Crew riders in a commanding position heading into the final stretch. But Harley's momentum from Laguna Seca — where they swept both races — makes this a must-watch weekend.
